Former teammates Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani had all-star games on a Monday that saw both teams in first place in their divisions.
Ohtani was 3-for-5 with a home run and a double to push his batting average to .345 as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Minnesota Twins 4-2 on the road.
The win kept the Blue Crew in first place in the National League West at 9-4. James Outman added a home run.
“You expect the ball to come off really hot when he swings the bat and he barrels it,” Dodger manager Dave Roberts said of Ohtani. “It’s something I have never seen. When he’s controlling the strike zone and he’s getting pitches in his nitro zone, there’s just really not a better hitter.”
James Paxton (2-0) worked six innings, giving up three hits and two earned runs. He struck put four batters and walked one. His ERA is now 1.64.
The two teams will tangle again on Tuesday with Tyler Glasgow (2-0) making the start for the Dodgers
BACK IN ANAHEIM, Trout also went 3-for-5, including a home run – his fifth of the season – and a triple, driving in two runs and scoring twice as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 7-1.
The victory lifted the Halos (6-4) into a first place tie with the Texas Rangers in the American League West.
