Cinco de Mayor (Fifth of May) is the day to celebrate the victory of Mexican forces against the invading French army in 1862.
It was a great victory for freedom, but you may not have much liberty if you celebrate too much this weekend, especially by drinking and driving.
Police in Garden Grove and Huntington Beach are encouraging motorists to be responsible by arranging for a designation driver when drinking alcohol.
Both police agencies are planning on stepped-up enforcement by adding additional patrol officers looking for drivers impaired by being under the influence of liquor or drugs.
“Don’t put yourself and others at risk by driving impaired,” said HBPD Sgt. Mike Thomas. “If you’re planning to celebrate with a drink or two, love your keys at home and designate a sober driver.,” said GGPD Chief Amir El-Farra.
Both agencies point out that alcohol isn’t the only substance that can impair judgment and lead to accidents or arrest. Marijuana, certain prescription medications and even some over-the-counter drug may also affect your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
