The long service of David Shawver as the mayor of Stanton may be coming to an end.
At Tuesday’s meeting of the council is an agenda item to place on the November 2024 general election ballot a two-term lifetime limit for the office of mayor. The terms are for four years.
Shawver has been on the city council since 1988 and has served several terms as mayor. He was most recently elected in November 2022, without opposition. The other council members already have a limit of two four-year terms.
If approved by the council and then by voters, Shawver would end his tenure as mayor in 2026.
The mayoral lifetime limit was raised in August 2023 by Councilmember Gary Taylor. In September 2023, the council voted 4-1 – with Shawver opposed – to have a proposed ordinance drawn up and placed on the November 2024 ballot, if the council approved.
Shawver was the sole “no” vote last year. “I think that we need to have long-time leadership. We need to have someone stay in that position and work with the newly-elected councilmembers since we now have term limits,” said Shawver at the time.
There will be a special closed session at 5:30 p.m. and at the joint regular session at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 7800 Katella Ave.
