A short-term spending bill that will provide the funding for federal government agencies for three months has been reached.
According to the Associated Press, a deal had been blocked by the agreement being linked to a mandate that states require proof of citizenship when registering to vote.
But Speaker of the House Mike Johnson removed that condition when it became clear that it would keep the deal from passing the House of Representatives.
The new plan does include an additional $231 million to beef up the U.S. Secret Service after two assassination attempts against former president and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Conflict heats up in Mideast
The use of remote control explosions of hand-held electronics against the Hezbollah group by Israel in Lebanon is being followed by more violence and angry words.
Hezbollah responded by launching about 150 missiles and drones into northern Israel, followed by the vow that “a new stage” of combat was now coming.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised that his government would take “whatever action is necessary” in retaliation.
Air strikes into Beirut killed at least 45 people, according to The New York Times.
Good day (mostly) for LA
Los Angeles-area teams won three of four games on Sunday.
- Dodgers 6, Rockies 5: After trailing 4-0 and 5-1, the Blue Crew rallied with five late runs, keyed by home runs by Shohei Ohtani (his 53rd) and a winning two-run shot by Mookie Betts in the ninth.
- Angels 9, Houston 8: In an old-fashioned slugfest, the Halos built a late 9-6 lead and held off a two-run ninth inning comeback by the Astros. Zach Neto drove in six runs, hitting two home runs (22nd and 23rd) to key the offense and prevent a series sweep by Houston.
- Rams 27, 49ers 24: Rookie kicker Joshua Karty kicked the game-winning field goal in the last five seconds of the contest to cap a stirring come-from-behind effort Sunday at SoFi Stadium. Kyren Williams was the other star for the Rams (now 1-2) as he rushed for 116 yards and scored three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving.
- Steelers 20, Chargers 10: All the news from Pittsburgh was bad for Bolts fans. First, quarterback Justin Herbert was injured and had to be sidelined. The Chargers (2-1) led 10-7 at halftime, bur the offense left with Herbert in the second half.
