Disney Co. to lay off hundreds

DISNEYLAND CASTLE

The Walt Disney Co., arguably one of the biggest media and entertainment giants in the world, announced Monday it would be laying off hundreds of employees.

According to United Press International, the cause of the trimming of staff was the decline in traditional TV revenue as customers switch to streaming.

This is the fourth round of layoffs by Disney within a year and over 7,000 jobs have been lost since Bob Iger, chief executive officer, took over leadership with a vow to reduce costs by $7.5 billion.

This comes, reports UPI, as the company had a year-over-year quarterly increase in earnings, sparked mostly by Disney “experiences,” including theme parks such as Anaheim’s Disneyland Resort.

Burn count up to 12 in Boulder

The number of people burned in the attack Sunday on a pro-Israel protest in Boulder, Colorado has been raised to 12.
USA Today reports that the number rose from eight when four more victims came forward.

The man arrested for attacking the crowd –– Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45 – is being charged with a federal hate crime as well as state offenses such as attempted murder, assault, and possession of an incendiary device.

In court Monday, Soliman said he hated all “Zionists” and wished them all dead. He had shouted “Free Palestine” in his attack. He had reportedly planned his attack for a year.

Sports: Angels homer way to a win

With six runs in the first inning and the winning home run in the sixth inning, the Los Angeles Angels showed off some of the offensive power that had been missing in their recent slump.

The Halos beat the Boston Red Sox 7-6 at Fenway Park, powered by four round-trippers including one by Mike Trout, his 10th of his interrupted season.

He batted 3-for-4 with three RBIs to raise his batting average to a respectable .224. His 10th homer of the season kept him tied with Zach Neto with 10.

Joe Adell did it twice to reach a total of nine, the last of which accounted for what proved to be the winning run. Neto led off the scoring by clearing the fences in the Angels’ first at-bat of the game.

With the win, the Angels are 27-32 and in fourth place in the American League West.

Weather: Summer almost here

June is the month in which summer officially begins, but it’s not here yet. However, this week looks very much like the opening act of the season of leisure. The forecast for Tuesday calls for clouds in the morning but sunshine in the afternoon with a daytime high of 74 and an overnight low of 62. Wednesday will be almost the same with 74 (60). Thursday looks a bit warmer at 75 (60) and Friday at 77 (61), both with partly cloudy skies.

Great Thoughts

“All the world is sad and dreary
Everywhere I roam
Oh, children, how my heart grows weary
Far from the old folks at home.”
– Stephen Foster

“I am unalterably opposed to government censorship. There will be no censorship of programming that does not meet with bureaucratic tastes. Censorship strikes at the taproot of our free society.”
– Newton Minow, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission.
