After two weeks of league play for most of our local high school football teams, some “key” matchups are emerging this week.
Here are some of those contests.
The game that will probably attract the most attention will be an Epsilon League meeting between Los Alamitos (7-0) and Edison (5-2). It’s the conference opener for both but is considered the game most likely to decide the champion.
Last year the Chargers finished third in the league, but won their last six games and earned a CIF-SS Division 3 championship.
On Friday in the Tango League Bolsa Grande (4-3, 2-0) will face off against Costa Mesa (6-1, 2-0).
Sigma League play on Friday will pit Ocean View (6-1, 2-0) vs. Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana (6-1, 2-0 in a crucial.
Another pretty good matchup should be the Omicron League game on Thursday matching Pacifica (4-3, 2-0) against Buena Park (4-3, 1-1).
The blowout of the week shapes up to be Rancho Alamitos (4-3, 1-1) against Santa Ana Valley (0-6-1, 0-2) in a Sigma League game.
Oilers on the rise
In this week’s High Five for local prep football, the Huntington Beach Oilers (6-1) rose from “on the bubble” all the way to second place, behind the Edison Chargers (5-2).
Western (4-3) dropped to third, Marina (5-2) remained in fourth and Orange (4-3) slipped from third to fifth.
“On the bubble” are Ocean View, Pacifica, Westminster, Los Amigos and Rancho Alamitos.
The rankings are drawn from MaxPreps.com, which use strength of schedule, recent seasons, etc. for their point system.
