Food aid at risk in shutdown

FOOD AID may be at risk due to the government shutdown (Shutterstock).

Federal food aid will run out Saturday, Nov 1., placing new financial pressures on families that rely on assistance from Uncle Sam to put food on the table.

According to the Associated Press, this announcement follows the decision by the Trump administration to not draw from $5 billion in contingency funds to help fund SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) that serves about one in eight Americans buy food.

Republicans are blaming Democrats –and Democrats slamming Republicans – in the Senate deadlock that has led to a government shutdown that started on Oct. 1.

At issue are tax credits to pay for medical expenses for the needy.
