Orange County – and many cities within it – chipped away at the OC’s reputation as a stronghold of conservatism in Tuesday’s special election on Proposition 50, the redistricting measure.

The county overall went in favor by 499,216 votes to 411, 549, or 54.81 percent to 45.19 percent. There was a turnout of 47.7 percent, which is high for a special election.

Among our West Orange County cities, three of four supported the measure, which will redraw Congressional maps to create as many as five more “Democrat-friendly” districts to counter a move by Texas to change its maps to create more “Republican-friendly” districts.

• Garden Grove supported Prop 50 by 16,335 votes to 11,483.
• Huntington Beach narrowly turned thumbs down by 30,752 “no” votes to 28,473 “yes”votes.
• Stanton backed Prop. 50 by 3,391 votes in favor to 2,026 opposed.
• Westminster also backed the new maps by 10,609 votes in favor and 9,600 opposed.
