A resolution “promoting protection of due process and civil liberties for all” was approved by the Garden Grove City Council on Wednesday night.
In favor were Vice Mayor Joe DoVinh and councilmembers Philip Nguyen, Ariana Arestegui and Yesenia Muneton.
Abstaining were Mayor Stephanie Klopfenstein and Councilmember Cindy Tran. George Brietigam was absent.
DoVinh, whose edits on the original proposal from Arestegui helped advance it, acknowledged there might be some repercussions from the proposal.
“If we can help even one family … I’m willing to take the risk. Let’s set an example for the other cities,” he said.
The resolution calls for committing the city to:
• “identify services, programs and partnerships to inform Garden Grove’s immigrant and refugee residents and to maintain a page on the city’s website with links to local immigration resources, including resources offering emergency and crisis support, legal services, workplace and employer guidance, support with contacting federal agencies, know-your-rights and legal education and school-related support.”
• direct city staff to “prepare information and preparedness resources for any emergency, including information relevant for those impacted by immigration enforcement activity, to be made available to community members and community organizations assisting those in need.”
