A new mayor will be chosen

The selection of a new mayor is the main focus of business at the next meeting of the Huntington Beach City Council.

That meeting will be held on Tuesday at 6 p.m. to choose a successor to the current mayor, Pat Burns. The mayor is elected for a one-year term at the first meeting in December.

There’s a protocol for the selection of which councilmember is elevated to the mayor’s post, but the city council can decide to choose another person.

A mayor pro tempore (vice mayor) is also chosen.

Before the selection, Mayor Burns will make some comments and there will be presentations to the outgoing mayor.

The position of mayor is primarily a ceremonial post. He or she presides over the running of the council meetings but has just one vote, the same as other members of the council.

The council will meet in its chambers at 2000 Main St.
