Second chance for the RCT?

ROSE CENTER THEATER in Westminster.

The death of the Rose Center Theater may be greatly exaggerated, or at least premature.

On Thursday a special meeting of the Westminster City Council will be convened at 4 p.m. to consider approving an amendment to the agreement for the continued operation of the city-owned facility.

At the Nov. 12 meeting, the council voted 3-2 to reject a proposed six-month amendment, and notified theater staff to vacate the building by the end of 2025The argument presented for ending the management deal with the Friends of the Rose Center Theater was that the operators of the RCT had the use of the theater without paying facility rent, full building maintenance or utility costs, all at a time when the city was facing a possible future financial crisis.

However, the staff report for this special meeting stated, “At this time Mayor [Chi Charlie ] Nguyen would like the City Council to consider conditions for a revised first amendment” and “discuss alternative terms and payments agreeable to both parties.”

The issue will be in the open session, preceded by a closed session at 3:30 p.m. The council will meet in its chambers at 8200 Westminster Blvd.
