Huntington Beach

A sweet honor for ‘Sugar’

SUGAR, the surfing dog.

Huntington Beach really is “Surf City.”

At Tuesday’s meeting of the Huntington Beach City Council, the closing item is a proposal to declare each Dec. 5 as “Sugar the Surfing Dog Day.”

As indicated by Mayor Casey McKeon, Sugar is a five-time world dog surfing champion, a five-time Huntington Beach Surf City Dog Champion and a Surfers’ Hall of Fame inductee.

In an otherwise routine meeting the city council will also consider declaring each Feb. 22 as “US Hockey Day,” as both the men’s and women’s United States ice hockey teams won gold medals at the Milan Winter Olympics.

The council will meet at 4 p.m. in closed session and at 6 p.m. in a study session and regular session in its chambers at 2000 Main St. (at Yorktown Avenue).

The following meeting is set for Tuesday, April 7.
