THE ANGELS and one high school football team posted wins Thursday night.

A two-run home run by Albert Pujols was all that Ricky Nolasco needed as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim defeated the Astros 2-0 in Houston Thursday night. Pujols’ blast, his 31st of the season, came in the first inning.

sportsbriefsNolasco (7-14) pitched seven scoreless innings, giving up just five hits. He struck out five batters and walked one. The win put the Angels (67-86) into fourth place in the American League West, one game ahead of the Oakland A’s.

Lions break through, get a win

Two of three local high school football teams went down to defeat Thursday night, but Westminster finally broke through and got its first victory of 2016. Here are the results:

Katella 35, Ocean View 24: The Seahawks fell to 2-2 with the loss at home. Adam Meyer caught one touchdown pass and kicked a field goal for OVHS; Rodrigo Adame and Noah DeLoera ran for scores in the non-league contest. Katella improved to 5-0.

Godinez 21, Rancho Alamitos 3: Blake Culbert passed for 132 yards but the Vaqueros couldn’t find the end zone in the non-league loss at Bolsa Grande Stadium. The lone RA tally came on a 26-yard field goal in the second quarter by Isreal Martinez. The green-and-gold are now 2-2.

Westminster 47, Magnolia 20: The Lions rolled up a 40-7 lead at halftme and went on to get the pre-league win at home, posting their first win after three losses. Noah Melbon passed for 264 yards and four touchdowns to Isayah Anderson, and ran for another score himself.
