Edison High’s football team advanced to the CIF-SS Division 3 finals Friday night with a 32-28 win over Rancho Verde in a semifinal contest.
The Chargers (12-1) will face La Mirada High (11-2) next week in the title game. The Matadores defeated Los Alamitos High 36-20 in the other semifinal.
Edison won the game with a final scoring drive 54 seconds to go when Griffin O’Connor ran the ball in. O’Connor finished with 295 yards passing, completing 19 of 33 passes with one interception.
DUCKS FALL BEHIND, CAN’T CATCH UP
The Anaheim Ducks spotted the Chicago Blackhawks the first three goals Friday night at Honda Center couldn’t quite catch the visitors, losing 3-2 to the Hawks (14-6-2)
After falling behind 3-0, the Ducks rallied with goals by Nick Ritchie and Jakob Silfverberg to get within one. The loss dropped the Ducks’ record to 9-8-4, good for 22 points and fourth place in the NHL Pacific Division. The Ducks will be in Philadelphia on Sunday.
PREP HOOPS GET UNDERWAY
High school football is almost done for local teams, and boys and girls basketball is just tipping off.
In a non-league contest on Friday, the La Quinta boys team defeated La Puente 64-39. Michael Nadeau scored 14 points in the win. The Aztecs are off to a 3-0 start.
