UPDATE: The Huntington Beach High girls’ basketball team fell just short of the CIF-SS Division 1-A title Friday as the Oilers lost 41-38 to Bishop Montgomery of Torrance at Azusa Pacific University.
The key blow came when Knights’ star Jessica Malazarte hit a three-pointer in the closing seconds for what proved to be the winning basket.
Frankie Wade-Sanchez, the Oiler star, scored 29 of her team’s 41 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. The orange-and-black finished the season with a 22-8 record.
The CIF-SS Division 1-A girls’ basketball title is at stake today at Azusa Pacific University when Huntington Beach High (22-7) faces Bishop Montgomery (Torrance) at 5 p.m.
The Oilers finished as co-champs of the Sunset League with Los Alamitos, while the Knights were the third-place team from the tough Del Rey League.
