Inquiry into shark catch is underway

An investigation is underway into the capture of what may be a great white shark off the Huntington Beach Pier.

The incident occurred last week and was publicized by the posting of a YouTube video showing several fishermen trying to haul the fish onto the pier after making the catch

LogoforNewsBriefsState Fish and Wildlife agents are trying to determine if the fish was a great white – which are protected by federal and state laws – or a bull shark.

Anyone catching a great white is required to release it immediately back into the water or face a $10,000 fine.

SPELLING BEE SET FOR MARCH 15

Garden Grove Unified School District elementary school students in grades four through six will participate in the 30th Annual Spelling Bee on Wednesday, March 15.

GGUSDlogoThe spelling competition begins at 9 a.m. at the Edgar School/District Meeting Center, 6202 Cerulean Ave. in Garden Grove. Each elementary school will send one representative to the competition.

The winning speller will receive a trophy that will be displayed at their school campus for an entire school year. The GGUSD serves most of Garden Grove and portions of Westminster and other cities.

CHAMBER MIXER AT COCO’S

The March mixer of the Garden Grove Chamber of Commerce will be held on Wednesday, March 1 5 from 5-7 p.m. at Coco’s Bakery Restaurant.

Light refreshments will be served and attendees are urged to bring their business cards and a door prize. RSVP’s are required. Call (714) 638-7950.

LOCAL STUDENTS HONORED

Two Garden Grove residents have recently been named to the Dean’s List at Boston University for the fall semester. Students recognized for this honor include: Chloe M. Jin and Thao Thanh T.Nguyen

Each school and college at Boston University has its own criterion for the Dean’s List, but students generally must attain a 3.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), or be in the top 30 percent of their class, as well as a full course load as a full-time student.
