Spartans fade in second half vs. MD

ORANGEWOOD ACADEMY’S girls’ basketball team lost to Mater Dei in the CIF SoCal Division II finals Friday.

For two quarters, the girls’ basketball team from Orangewood Academy of Garden Grove played national power Mater Dei close in the CIF SoCal Division II Regional final at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa.

The Spartans led 25-19 at one point and trailed only 28-25 at halftime, but the Monarchs pulled away with a 12-5 burst in the third quarter and went on to win 50-39. Mater Dei now finishes the season on Saturday with a contest in Sacramento for the state title.

Orangewood was led by Estafina Giner and Jaqueline Saucedo, who each scored 13 points. The team finished with a 22-10 record.

DUCKS LOSE IN SHOOTOUT

The Anaheim Ducks lost 2-1 to the Buffalo Bills in a shootout Friday night at Honda Center. Zembgus Girgensons scored in the 10th round of the shootout to lift the visitors to the win.

Anaheim’s sole goal in regulation was scored by Rickard Rakell in the first period, his 31st of the year. The Ducks are now 37-23-11, still in second place in the NHL Pacific Division. Next up will be a game Saturday in San Jose against the first place Sharks (42-21-17).
