When two softball powerhouses meet, something’s got to give. At the Pacifica High field on Thursday, it was the Mariners who yielded, losing 7-1 to an undefeated team from Gahr High School in a non-league contest.
The Mariners fell to 6-5, while the Gladiators went to 11-0. Pacifica came into the game ranked seventh in Division 1 of the CIF-SS, while Gahr is first in Division 2.
Things went south quickly for the girls from West Garden Grove. The visitors loaded the bases in the top of the first with no outs and ended up pushing across two runs for a 2-0 lead. Julia Cabral made the start for the M’s and took the loss.
Gahr added two more runs in the third to go up 4-0. The Mariners cut the margin to 4-1 on Alani Nguyen’s fourth-inning solo home run and went 3-for-3, accounting for half of Pacifica’s hits.
The Gladiators poured on three runs in the top of the sixth to put the game out the game out of reach. Pacifica is next in action on Oct. 30 hosting another top-notch team, Santiago High of Corona. The Sharks are 9-2 overall and maxpreps.com ranks them 14th in the state.
