Cavs keep winning, can’t keep in 1st

THE SANTIAGO HIGH softball team is 14-0 and dropped from 1st to 4th in the latest CIF-SS poll.

Win 14 games in a row and drop four spots in the poll? The Santiago High softball team has gone unbeaten all season, including a 9-7 win over Newport Harbor on Saturday. But in the new CIF-SS poll released Monday afternoon, the Cavaliers dropped from first place in last week’s Division 6 poll to fourth place this week.

Other results made a bit more sense. Huntington Beach remained number one in the Division 1 baseball poll, and Pacifica fell off the top 10 for Division 1 softball after a 7-1 loss to Gahr last week.

Here are the local teams serving Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area that received recognition this week.

Baseball: Huntington Beach is first in Division 1.

Softball: Santiago is fourth and Rancho Alamitos fifth in Division 6.

Boys’ tennis: In Division 2, Fountain Valley is ninth. In Division 3, Edison is eighth.

Boys’ volleyball: Huntington Beach and Edison are seventh and ninth in Division 1. Fountain Valley is ninth in Division 2. In Division 4, Bolsa Grande is third and Garden Grove seventh. La Quinta was not ranked, but received some votes.
