Five of the high school sports programs in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area will be shifted into new alignments starting with the 2018-19 school year.

According to published reports, among the changes will be the transfer of Garden Grove High out of the Garden Grove League, of which it was a founding member in 1966.

The decisions came out of a meeting Monday among Orange County athletic administrators, and could still be appealed to the CIF-SS. As reported, here are the changes affecting local schools.

  • The Golden West Conference will be a football-only arrangement, with Garden Grove, Godinez, Laguna Beach, Marina, Ocean View, Segerstrom, Western and Westminster. For all other athletics, the Golden West will be a six-team grouping including Grove, Godinez, Ocean View, Segerstrom, Western and Westminster. Marina will remain in the Sunset for non-football events. Laguna will be in the Sunset for all sports but football.
  • The Sunset League becomes the Sunset Conference, with Marina being replaced by Corona del Mar for football.
  • Loara moves from the Golden West League into the Garden Grove League, replacing Grove.
  • Orange High moves from the Golden West League to the Orange Coast League.

Once finalized, the new lineups will be in place for two years.
