A former president of a Garden Grove youth sports organization is facing seven counts of grand theft in connection with the alleged embezzlement of over $47,000.
According to Lt. Carl Whitney of the Garden Grove Police Department, Brenda Renee Escarpe, 44, was arrested in Arizona on a $100,000 arrest warrant, booked into Pima County Jail and released on bond with the requirement to appear at West Justice Center in Westminster. She made her first court appearance on April 3 and has another date before a judge in June.
Police say that league representatives accused Escarpe, as president of the Central Garden Grove Little League, on July 31, 2015, of embezzling. Investigations by police and the Orange County District Attorney’s office revealed that $47,089 had been taken from the organization’s accounts. League officials say that the resulting financial shortfall led to a drop from 300 baseball players to 100, as bills for trophies, uniforms and equipment went unpaid.
“Parents lost trust in the board members and took their players to other leagues,” said Rob Hovis, a member of the GGLL board. “The children of the league were hurt the most by this theft.”
Investigators determined that Escarpe had moved from her home in Westminster to Sahuarita, Arizona, where she was arrested by local authorities.
