What’s big? No need to “Wonder”

GAL GADOT stars as “Wonder Woman” is the big film release out this weekend (Warner Bros.)

It could be a “Wonder-ful” weekend for Warner Bros. stockholders and fans of Amazon mythology. The big movie opening Friday also represents a potential breakthrough, as it’s the first superhero film starring a woman.

Here’s a look at what’s entertaining this weekend in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area.

  • “Wonder Woman” opens on Friday, starring Gal Gadot as the Amazon princess Diana and Chris Pine as the man who introduces her to the outside world. The film, rated PG-13, is set during World War II, and Diana/Gadot dedicates herself to stopping the war. Early reviews have been raves; 97 percent of the coverage reported on is positive.
  • “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” is a different sort of superhero film. It’s an animated movie based on the popular series of children’s books. Rated PG.

  • “The Wedding Singer” opens Friday at the Westminster Community Playhouse, 7272 Maple Ave. in Westminster. It’s a live adaptation of the Adam Sandler movie of the same name about a broken-hearted vocalist. The show will be on stage weekends through June 18, with Friday and Saturday performances at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.
