Voting rights issue on WSD agenda
In a closed session as part of Thursday’s meeting of the Westminster School District, the WSD Board of Trustees will confer with its legal counsel about receipt of a demand made under the California Voting Rights Act of 2001.
The CVRA has been invoked in other areas – including the Garden Grove Unified School District and the City of Garden Grove – to overturn long-standing “at-large” elections for governing board and city council. The CVRA has been employed to argue that voting citywide or district-wide for elected officials dilutes the political power of minority groups.
The WSD board meets in closed session at its offices at 14121 Cedarwood Ave. at 5 p.m., with the public session starting at 7 p.m.
