Garden Grove High’s football team won its CIF-SS Division 8 opener Thursday night, defeating Sunny Hills High School 42-28 at Michael Monsoor Stadium.
The Argonauts (7-3) advance to the quarterfinal round on Nov. 17 against the winner of Friday’s contest between Silverado and Citrus Valley. Thursday’s win was Grove’s sixth straight win after a 1-3 start.
Against the Lancers (8-3), the Argos fell behind early 21-7 as the county’s top rusher, Alex Jung, scored a couple of touchdowns. But in the second half, the home team took over, outscoring Sunny Hills 28-7 over the last two quarters.
Dominik Sanchez and Mike Carrillo found end zone pay dirt in the final quarter as Grove pulled away from a 28-28 deadlock. Jung ended up with three touchdowns and 281 yards rushing for Sunny Hills, but was largely held in check in the second half.
