New mayor to be named on Monday

BARBARA DELGLEIZE was sworn last December as the mayor of Huntington Beach. A new mayor will be chosen on Monday (OC Tribune photo).

The selection of a new mayor and mayor pro tempore will be the highlight of Monday’s meeting of the Huntington Beach City Council.

The top two elected officials are chosen on an annual basis by a vote of the city council from amongst them. Barbara Delgleize will conclude her duties at the meeting and hand the gavel over to her successor.

As is protocol, Delgleize will make some comments and then offer presentations to her colleagues on the council. Following that, the election will be made of a new mayor, who will be sworn in by Jim Silva, a former Huntington Beach mayor.

A mayor pro tempore – a sort of vice mayor – will then be elected and sworn in by the city clerk. The two top officials will speak and then the session will be adjourned to a reception to meeting rooms adjacent to the council chambers.

The council will meet in its regular session at 6 p.m. in the chambers at 2000 Main St. (at Yorktown Avenue).
