A shootout loss by the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday kept the Ducks from taking over sole possession of third place in the NHL Pacific Division. The Orange County team lost the 2-1 decision to the Oilers in Edmonton.
The only Duck goal was from Ryan Kesler, who tallied on a power play at the 0:18 mark of the third period. John Gibson had 33 saves in goal for the visitors, who saw their three-game losing streak snapped.
Anaheim is now 19-14-9, good for 47 points and a tie for third with the San Jose Sharks. Next up for the Ducks will be visit to Calgary on Saturday against the Flames (20-16-4).
Ruelas leads Lobos; Niemand paces Chargers
Steven Zuelas scored 25 points to head Los Amigos to a 64-59 non-league win over Estancia on Thursday night. The win improved the Lobos’ record to an 8-8 mark.
LAHS will open Garden Grove League play on Jan. 10 at home against Rancho Alamitos (4-11).
The top scorer among local girls’ teams on Thursday was Ashley Niemand of Edison, who tallied 22 points for the Chargers in the 54-15 Sunset League game against Marina. It was the SL opener for both teams. The Chargers are now 8-7 overall while the Vikings went to 4-11.
