Hitters shine in prep softball play

SOME OUTSTANDING performances on Thursday in local prep softball.

High school softball on Thursday was marked by extraordinary performances for teams in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area.

In Edison’s 10-0, five-inning win over Newport Harbor, the Chargers were led by Hailie Benko, who went 3-for-3, hit two home runs and drove in six runs.

In Huntington Beach’s 8-1 win over Fountain Valley, the Oilers’ Jadelyn Allchin went 4-for-4 with a single, double, triple and home run. She drove in two runs. The Oilers are 3-0 in the Sunset League and will face first place Los Alamitos on April 17 at home.

Also noteworthy was Marina’s near-upset of Los Alamitos, losing 7-6 in 11 innings. The Griffins (18-1 overall and 3-0 in the Sunset League) are ranked fifth nationally and third in the state by maxpreps.com. The Vikings (9-8 and 0-3) are 402nd and 91st.

In other softball action, Garden Grove defeated Los Amigos 9-0 in Garden Grove League play, while Rancho Alamitos bested Bolsa Grande 16-1 in a five-inning contest.
