Mariners get a tie for Empire crown

PACIFICA defeated Cypress to tie up the Empire League baseball title with Cypress High.

Josh Miranda’s grand slam was the key to Pacifica’s 8-3 win over Cypress on Thursday, propelling the Mariners into a tie for the Empire League baseball title.

Both the M’s and Centurions finished with 9-1 league records and will open CIF-SS play next week with home games.

Playoff pairings will be announced this weekend.

Miranda ended up with two hits and five RBIs, Jovanny Reyes worked seven innings on the mound for Pacifica, giving up six hits and one earned run while striking out three.

In other baseball action on Thursday involving local teams in the Garden Grove-Huntington Beach-Westminster area:

• Huntington Beach 7, Edison 3

• La Quinta 8, Los Amigos 0

• Garden Grove 3, Bolsa Grande 1 (eight innings)

• Rancho Alamitos 8, Santiago 0

In softball action, Cypress defeated Pacifica 5-4.

With league action concluded, here is how local league races ended up.

Empire League baseball: Pacifica and Cypress tied for first.

Empire League softball: Cypress won the title, Pacifica tied for second.

Garden Grove League baseball: Rancho Alamitos in first, La Quinta second, Garden Grove third.

Garden Grove League softball: Garden Grove first, Santiago, La Quinta and Rancho Alamitos tied for second.

Golden West League baseball: Segerstrom is first, with Ocean View second and Loara third.

Golden West League softball: Segerstrom is first, with Ocean View second and Westminster third.

Sunset League baseball: Huntington Beach is first, with Los Alamitos second and Fountain Valley third,

Sunset League softball: Huntington Beach is tied for first with Los Alamitos, and Edison in third.
