A major expansion of the cemetery area on the grounds of the Christ Cathedral campus will go before the Garden Grove Planning Commission on Thursday, July 19.

What’s proposed is the completion – with some modifications – of a previously approved expansion of the Memorial Gardens at Lewis Street and Chapman Avenue.

Planned are an enlargement of the internment area and the construction of three new buildings: an administrative office, a cremation niche building and a maintenance building. The proposed site plan calls for a modification of the maximum building height requirements for those structures.

Also on the agenda is a request for a conditional use permit to demolish an existing 50-foot tall pole sign and to replace it with a new 59-foot tall V-shaped, freeway-oriented electronic reader board sign for Next Sports. That’s an indoor sports facility located at 12821 Knott St. The sign would face the Garden Grove (22) Freeway.

The commission meets at 7 p.m. in the council chamber in the Community Meeting Center, 11300 Stanford Ave.
