Seven head into second CIF week

SEVEN local high school teams are playing second week CIF-SS playoff contests.

Let’s call them “The Magnificent Seven.” We’re referring to the number of local high school sports teams that have survived the first week of the winter CIF-SS playoffs and advanced to this week’s action.

Here are teams from the Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Stanton and Westminster communities that will play second round and quarterfinal contests Tuesday (today) and Wednesday.

Girls’ soccer

  • Los Amigos at San Dimas on Tuesday in Division 5.

Boys’ soccer

  • Loyola at Edison on Wednesday in Division 1.

Girls’ basketball

  • Roosevelt at Huntington Beach on Wednesday in Division 2-AA.

Boys’ basketball

  • Covina at Pacifica on Tuesday in Division 3-A.
  • La Quinta at Pacifica Christian on Tuesday in Division 4-A.
  • Rolling Hills Prep at Ocean View on Tuesday in Division 3-AA
  • Wilson/Hacienda Heights at Garden Grove on Tuesday in Division 4-AA.

Get out your gloves and bat

Believe it or now, baseball and softball seasons are right around the corner.

CIF-SS pre-season polls for both sports are out. Four local teams are listed in the top 10s for each. They are:

Baseball:

  • Division 1: Huntington Beach is sixth.
  • Division 3: Marina is second.
  • Division 5: La Quinta is fourth and Garden Grove is seventh.

Softball(teams are unranked)

  • Division 1: Huntington Beach.
  • Division 2: Edison and Marina.
  • Division 6: Santiago.
  • Division 7: La Quinta.

Oh, and your nets, too …

Boys’ volleyball is a spring sport in the CIF-SS, and here are the local teams listed in the pre-season poll.

  • Divisions 1 and 2: Huntington Beach
  • Division 4: Garden Grove and Rancho Alamitos
  • Division 5: Ocean View and Orangewood Academy.
