Angels rally late to post first win

THE ANGELS won but the Ducks lost.

Better late than never.

After falling behind 2-0 through seven innings of their game against the Athletics in Oakland Friday night, the Los Angeles Angels rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth and two more in the top of the ninth to post a 6-2 win.

Mike Trout and Andrelton Simmons each had two hits and two RBIs as the Halos squared their record at 1-1 and gave new manager Brad Ausmus hits first victory as an Angel.

Matt Harvey pitched six strong innings for the Orange County team, yielding four hits and two runs. He walked three and struck out one. The victory went to Hansel Robles in relief.

On Saturday the Angels will again take on the A’s in Oakland.

Ducks score early, and then ….

Andy Welinski scored at the 10:04 mark of the first period for the Anaheim Ducks Friday night, but it was all downhill from there. The Calgary Flames scored the next six goals to get a 6-1 triumph.

The loss put Anaheim’s win-loss record at 32-37-10 (74) points, seventh place in the NHL Pacific Division. The Ducks are next in action Saturday visiting the Edmonton Oilers.

Grand slam lifts Vikings

Chase Hennessey hit a walk-off grand slam home run to lift the Marina High School baseball team to a 4-0 victory over Corona del Mar Friday afternoon.

The victory improved the Vikings’ overall record to 12-7 and 3-2 in the Sunset/Wave league, tied for first with the Laguna Beach Breakers.

Santiago posted its first Garden Grove League win Friday, edging Bolsa Grande 8-7. Benny Ramos drove in four runs for the Cavaliers (2-7 overall and 1-7 in league).

In softball play, Emily Rush pitched seven one-hit innings as Marina edged Edison 2-0 and moved into a tie for first place with Los Alamitos in the Sunset/Surf League. The Vikes are 14-5 overall and 3-1 in league.
