
THE LOSA ANGELES ANGELS came from behind to win big on Thursday and the Pacifica Mariners finished their softball league season unbeaten.
On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Angels built a big early lead and ended up losing. On Thursday, the Halos turned the tables and came out with an 11-5 win over the New York Yankees in Anaheim.
The Yanks led 4-0 in the early going, but the Angels scored 11 unanswered runs to run away with the game. David Fletcher had five RBIs – including three on a triple – and Kole Calhoun hit a three-run homer as the Angels avoided a sweep. Tommy La Stella went deep again for his seventh homer of the season.
Now, the Orange County team is 10-16, fifth place in the American League West, six games back of the lead. The Angels will hit the road to play the Kansas City Royals (8-17) with Tyler Skaggs (1-2) slated to make the start on Friday.
Mariners sweep to Empire softball title
The Pacifica High softball team claimed not just the Empire League pennant but a clean sweep of conference play with a 7-4 victory over Kennedy High in La Palma.
Thursday’s victory gave the Mariners a 10-0 record in the EL and an overall record of 16-3-1. The win over the Fighting Irish was the M’s ninth consecutive victory.
Julia Cabral pitched a complete game for PHS, and offensive firepower was supplied by Lillyana Martinez – two hits, a triple and two RBIs – and Lanaia Leuta with two hits and two runs batted in.
