Police kill a knife-wielding suspect

A 20-year-old Garden Grove man was fatally shot by police early Saturday morning.

According to Lt. Carl Whitney of GGPD, Andrew Giovanni Meza was killed by Garden Grove police officers in an incident around 2 a.m. in the area of the 12100 block of Wilken Way, located in the northeastern corner of the city.

Police responded to the area on a report of a suicidal man who had “just killed someone” and was armed with a knife. As officers approached the scene, the shooting occurred and Meza was hit several times. A knife was found at the scene.

Officers gave first aid to the suspect and Garden Grove Fire Department paramedics arrived to treat the suspect and the 18-year-old female stabbing victim. Meza was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to a local hospital and was reported in stable condition. She is relative of the suspect.

An investigation into the shooting by the Orange County District Attorney’s office and the GGPD’s Crimes Against Persons Unit is underway.
