Garden Grove

Police, fire depts. continue July 4 efforts

ILLEGAL FIREWORKS seized by authorities in Garden Grove.

For the upcoming July 4th holiday, the Garden Grove Police and Fire Departments are raising public awareness on safety and increased police and fire presence.  Using or possessing illegal fireworks, including misusing or tampering with legal ones, carries a $1,000 administrative fine.

Only safe and sane fireworks bearing the California State Fire Marshal seal are permitted from July 1 through July 4. In accordance with Garden Grove Municipal Code firework regulations, discharge of safe and sane fireworks is permissible on private property only.

On July 4, the fire department will be deploying additional fire fighters and fire investigators, and extra police patrols will be identifying violators of the City’s municipal code on fireworks. Patrols will focus on high-activity illegal fireworks areas including Katella Street, between Euclid and Brookhurst; Dino Circle; Garden Grove Park; and the Buena Clinton neighborhood.

Garden Grove Animal Care Services will also maintain an on-call officer on July 4.  If a pet goes missing, call (714) 741-5565, and press 1 for Field Services.

All city parks will close by 5 p.m. on July 4, including tennis courts, basketball courts, and softball fields, with park sprinklers activated.

While July 4 calls for service decreased in 2018, the police department issued 71, $1,000 administrative citations—higher than in 2016 and 2017 when the numbers were 47 and 58, respectively. The highest number of $1,000 citations, 126, were issued in 2007, the first year that the $1,000 administrative citation was activated.

Garden Grove firework sales take place from July 1 through July 4.  Hours are: 10:00 a.m. to 11 p.m., July 1 through 3; and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on July 4.

To report illegal fireworks, call the Garden Grove Police Department’s non-emergency number at (714) 741-5704. Be prepared to provide the address where the illegal fireworks were lit and a description of the individual(s) involved. Call 911 for emergencies only.
