Surf’s up in Huntington this weekend

THE U.S. OPEN of Surfing is one of the events which makes the Huntington Beach Pier area “the Carnegie Hall” of the sport (US Open photo).

Huntington Beach is not known as “Surf City” without reason. One of the big ones is the annual U.S. Open of Surfing, set to open Saturday and run through Aug. 4. On top of that, the biggest buddy movie of the year – and maybe of the decade – is out in cinemas this week. So, whether you like the sunny outdoors or the cool indoors, there’s fun to be had in the West Orange County area this weekend.

EVENTS: The Vans’ U.S Open of Surfing will bring many of the world’s top surfers – youth, men and women – to the city beach at the municipal pier at Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway. In addition, there will be skateboarding and BMX (dirt bike riding) action as well. For more details and schedule, go to https://www.vansusopenofsurfing.com.

MOVIES: “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” is the big Hollywood flick opening this weekend. It stars Leo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt in a 60s story linking movies with the Charles Manson family. It’s rated R.

ON STAGE: Live plays for your in-person pleasure are:

  • “West Side Story” at the Gem Theater in Garden Grove
  • “The Bad Seed” at the Westminster Community Playhouse
  • “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” at the Rose Center Theater in Westminster.

MUSIC: At the Garden Amp (also known as the Festival Amphitheater) in Garden Grove on Saturday, it’s the “Orange Crush’d 4” show featuring the Adolescents. It all starts at noon in the venue on Main Street in downtown Garden Grove.

SPORTS: The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are at home taking on the Baltimore Orioles Friday through Sunday, with starting times of 7, 6 and 1 p.m., respectively.
