26 stars for area prep footballers

MARINA VIKINGS were pretty happy after defeating Muir 18-9  to win the CIF-SS Division 11 football crown. Many Vikings made all-CIF/SS honors announced this week (Orange County Tribune photo by Jim Tortolano).

Twenty-five players and one coach from 11 schools serving the communities of Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Stanton and Westminster have been honored by the CIF-SS as football all-stars for the fall 2019 season.

Marina had the best showing. In Division 11, Dane Brenton, junior wide receiver, was named offensive player of the year. Nathan O’Rourke, senior linebacker, was named defensive player of the year and Jeff Turley is coach of the year as the Vikings won the school’s first CIF-SS football division title.

Here’s the list of local schools and athletes as announced on Monday. All players are seniors except as noted.

DIVISION 2

Edison: Mike Walter OLB/RB. Cole Koffler WR/FS. Trent Jordahl T/DL.

DIVISION 7

Huntington Beach: Christian Moore, TE.

DIVISION 8

Garden Grove: Tafisi Gauta DL.

Pacifica: Isaiah Blevens RB.

Orange: Isaac Galvan RB, Jeremiah Rivera DL.

Western: Caine Savage, Cassius Savage, WR.

DIVISION 11

Marina: Connor Long LB, Eric Church DB, Pharoah Rush RB, Darren Vasquez DL (11), Isaiah Reagan OL, Chase Hogland OL, Joseph Kelso OL.

DIVISION 12

Ocean View: Brandon Alcarez WR.

DIVISION 13

Rancho Alamitos: Seymore Brown TE/FB (11).

DIVISION 14

Loara: Ahmed Hassanein DL (11), Devin Garcia DL (11), Robert Aguilar Enriquez DL.

Santiago: Derrick Martin RB (11).

This week’s CIF-SS boys’ and girls’ basketball rankings as concerns local teams.

BOYS

Division 4AA

  • Orangewood Academy is tied for 16th.

Division 5A

  • Los Amigos is eighth.

GIRLS

Open Division Watch List

  • Orangewood

Division 2AA

  • Orangewood is first.

Division 4AA

  • Santiago is 16th.

Division 5A

  • Loara is tied for ninth. Los Amigos tied for 12th.

And in other winter sports …

BOYS’ SOCCER

Division 2

  • Santiago is seventh.

Division 3

  • Loara is 10th.

GIRLS ‘SOCCER

Division 1

  • Pacifica is seventh.

Division 7

  • Loara is second.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Divisions 1 and 2

  • Huntington Beach is 21st.

Division 4

  • Edison is tied for fifth.

Division 5

  • Garden Grove is eighth.

Division 6

  • Marina is second, Western is 10th, Loara received some votes.

Division 7

  • Rancho Alamitos is sixth, Westminster is ninth and La Quinta is 10th.

And now, the basketball stretch run.

This is the final week for local prep basketball, with most leagues finishing up on Thursday. The CIF-SS pairings will be out this coming weekend, with playoffs starting next week.

Meanwhile, here’s a quick look at the title outlooks. Boys first.

Edison has a one-game lead over Newport in the Surf League. In the Golden West League, Garden Grove is 6-2, followed by Ocean View and Segerstrom, each at 5-3.

In the Garden Grove League, Los Amigos has clinched no worse than a tie for the title with Bolsa Grande and Santiago each two games back.

On the girls’ side, Huntington Beach has no worse than a tie for the Surf League crown, Orangewood leads the San Joaquin by one game over Fairmont Prep. Garden Grove is no worse than co-champs of the Golden West League, with Segerstrom two games back with two to play.

In the Garden Grove League, Santiago has a similar hold, with Rancho Alamitos and La Quinta two games behind.
