Twenty-five players and one coach from 11 schools serving the communities of Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Stanton and Westminster have been honored by the CIF-SS as football all-stars for the fall 2019 season.
Marina had the best showing. In Division 11, Dane Brenton, junior wide receiver, was named offensive player of the year. Nathan O’Rourke, senior linebacker, was named defensive player of the year and Jeff Turley is coach of the year as the Vikings won the school’s first CIF-SS football division title.
Here’s the list of local schools and athletes as announced on Monday. All players are seniors except as noted.

- Orangewood Academy is tied for 16th.
- Los Amigos is eighth.

- Huntington Beach is 21st.
- Edison is tied for fifth.
- Garden Grove is eighth.
- Marina is second, Western is 10th, Loara received some votes.
- Rancho Alamitos is sixth, Westminster is ninth and La Quinta is 10th.
And now, the basketball stretch run.
This is the final week for local prep basketball, with most leagues finishing up on Thursday. The CIF-SS pairings will be out this coming weekend, with playoffs starting next week.
Meanwhile, here’s a quick look at the title outlooks. Boys first.
Edison has a one-game lead over Newport in the Surf League. In the Golden West League, Garden Grove is 6-2, followed by Ocean View and Segerstrom, each at 5-3.
In the Garden Grove League, Los Amigos has clinched no worse than a tie for the title with Bolsa Grande and Santiago each two games back.
On the girls’ side, Huntington Beach has no worse than a tie for the Surf League crown, Orangewood leads the San Joaquin by one game over Fairmont Prep. Garden Grove is no worse than co-champs of the Golden West League, with Segerstrom two games back with two to play.
In the Garden Grove League, Santiago has a similar hold, with Rancho Alamitos and La Quinta two games behind.
