Garden Grove police Thursday evening arrested a man for attempted murder in a domestic dispute.

According to Sgt. Juan Centeno of the GGPD, Joseph B. Delatorre, 43, was arrested in an incident that saw SWAT and hostage negotiators called to duty.

At 5 p.m. officers were dispatched to a home in the 8600 block of Meadow Brook Ave. (east  of Newland Street, just north of the Garden Grove Freeway) regarding the altercation between the suspect and a 55-year-old woman. The woman was outside the residence when police arrived.

The suspect refused to come out of the home. An investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly choked and attempted to smother the victim. She called police and was able to escape without further injury. She added that the suspect owned firearms, including a rifle.

Attempts to get the suspect to come out failed and special weapons and tactics and hostage negotiation teams were activated. After hours of negotiating, the suspect came out of the door, but changed his mind. He tried to re-enter, but was caught by a police K-9.

The victim received medical treatment and is expected to survive. The suspect was treated at a local hospital and pending his release from there will be booked at Orange County Jail for various charges including the attempted homicide.

Detectives are asking that any witnesses with information about the incident call (714) 741-5839.
