On the opening day of the 2020 Republican National Convention, Donald Trump was nominated Monday to run for a second term as president. Charlotte Convention Center in North Carolina was the setting, with a live roll call.
“The country is counting on us,” said Trump,” according to United Press International. “We are getting ready to see things we have never seen before. We have done more in this administration than any other administration in our history.”
Vice President Mike Pence was also nominated for a second term as vice president.
The convention will continue through Thursday, with the President delivering his acceptance speech from the south lawn of the White House.
On Tuesday, First Lady Melania Trump will speak from the Rose Garden at the White House. Pence will speak from Fort McHenry in Maryland on Wednesday.
Protests, violence follow police shooting
The Wisconsin National Guard has been called out in the wake of violent protests that followed the shooting by police of a black man.
According to the Associated Press, Gov. Tony Evers said 125 WNG soldiers will be in Kenosha this evening in cast of a repeat of Sunday’s disorder in which cars were set on fire, windows smashed and some people battled police in riot gear.
The protests stemmed from the shooting of Jacob Blake, 27, who was hospitalized in serious condition after being shot. A video shot by an onlooker shows Blake being shot in the back while leaning into his vehicle.
The three officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave.
The police union president said that some critics were too quick to judge “the intricacies of a highly dynamic incident.”
