A pedestrian trying to cross a major thoroughfare in Huntington Beach Sunday evening was struck by a car and suffered fatal injuries.

According to Motor Sgt. Joshua Page of the HBPD, the accident took place in the intersection of Brookhurst Street and Hamilton Avenue at around 6:29 p.m.

Arriving officers found a Chrysler Sebring, driven by Melanie Benner of Laguna Woods, and a male identified only as a transient.

Investigators believe the Sebring was traveling east on Hamilton when it struck the pedestrian, who was crossing south on Brookhurst against the traffic light. He suffered “extensive injuries” and was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver remained on the scene and was arrested for misdemeanor driving under the influence. Witnesses to the incident are asked to call HBPD Traffic Investigator Doug Demetre at (714) 536-5670.
