Perhaps signaling the imminent demise of one of American history’s most deadly diseases, the number of Orange County residents who died from the coronavirus remained at one for the second day in a row.

According to the county health care agency, Thursday’s count of confirmed new cases rose from 11 to 28, but deaths remained at a rock-bottom low and hospitalizations declined from 66 to 61.

Patients being treated for COVID-19 in intensive care units increased from eight to 18.

To-date cases in the OC of coronavirus are at 255,109, of which 248,755 are considered recovered. The death toll is at 5,056.

Nationally, new cases are down by 37 percent over a two-week period, according to The New York Times, with a 17 percent decline in deaths. In California, cases are down 27 percent and deaths 25 percent over a similar period.
