6 locals advance to next round

Vikes, Spartans, Pioneers, Panthers win

Four local boys’ high school basketball teams will advance to the CIF-SS quarterfinal round to be played on Tuesday, June 1.

On Friday night, Marina defeated Cabrillo High of Long Beach 63-46 in 3A play. In 4AA action, Pacifica lost 57-51 to Arcadia, but Orangewood Academy rolled past Burroughs High of Ridgecrest 72-40.

In 5AA play, Rancho Alamitos lost 49-33 to El Monte, but Western turned back Canyon Springs 61-55. Orange defeated Hillcrest of Thousand Oaks 78-49 in Division 5A and will face Desert Hot Springs on Tuesday. Bolsa Grande lost 77-44 to Valley Torah in another 5AA contest.

Cavaliers, Aztecs advance in CIF girls’ hoops

Two of four local high school teams who began CIF-SS girls’ basketball playoff action on Thursday won their games and advance to the second round on Saturday.

In Division 1 action, Huntington Beach lost 69-26 to Bishop Montgomery.

In Division 4AA play, Santiago defeated Centennial of Compton 66-27 and will visit Diamond Bar next. La Quinta bested Bishop Conaty-Loretto 46-38 and will host Mary Star of the Sea.

Rancho Alamitos lost 68-49 to Rosemead.
