New cases fall, but remain high

Confirmed new cases of coronavirus in Orange County declined in Thursday’s report, but remained historically high.

According to the county health care agency, new cases declined from 532 on Wednesday to 522 today. But in April, the daily totals ranged from 73 to 90.

There was one death in today’s report, compared to zero on Wednesday. Hospitalizations increased from 215 to 236. Patients being treated for COVID-19 in intensive care units remained steady at 56.

To date, coronavirus cases in Orange County total 263,578, of which 251,384 are considered recovered. The death total is at 5,141.

Across the nation, The New York Times calculates that – over a 14-day period – new cases rose by 145 percent, and deaths by 11 percent. In California, new cases were up by 151 percent and deaths down by 8 percent, over a similar period.
