The suspect in an attack on a student at Chapman University in Orange has been arrested.
According to the Orange Police Department, Jerome Bell, 22, of Anaheim was taken into custody Monday evening and later booked into Orange County Jail in Santa Ana for assault with intent to commit rape.
Early last Friday morning, at about 12:40, a man attacked and sexually assaulted an 18-year-old female student near her dormitory in the area of Walnut Avenue and Grand Street. She fought back against her attacker and was aided by other students who came to her aid.
The suspect was wearing black clothing and a “skeleton-style” mask or gaiter. He was last seen walking south on Glassell Street in the downtown area.
After police posted an image of the suspect, the suspect was brought to the university to surrender by a family member. Police were notified and made the arrest. Bell is not a student and has no connection to the university.
“We will not tolerate this type of heinous activity in Orange,” said Police Chief Dan Adams. “We hope the students and staff of Chapman University and residents of Orange can regain a sense of safety knowing this suspect has been arrested and we are confident he will be held to answer on the charges.”
