The count of confirmed new coronavirus cases in Orange County surged in Tuesday’s report.

According to the county health care agency, the total jumps from Monday’s three-day average of 449 to 652 today. Deaths went from two to four and hospitalizations declined from 195 to 188.

The number of patients being treated for COVID-19 in intensive care units remained steady at 56 for the third consecutive day.

To date, Orange County has had 320,838 cases, of which 306,508 are considered recovered. The total number of deaths is at 5,857.

On the national level, The New York Times is reporting that – over a 14-day period – new cases are averaging a 20 percent increase, while deaths are up 3 percent. In California, cases are up 5 percent but deaths are down 13 percent over a similar period, according to Los Angeles Times.
