Quarterfinal time for hoops

THREE local boys’ high school teams will play CIF-SS quarterfinals games Friday.

It’s the CIF-SS quarterfinals for three local boys’ high school basketball teams today (Friday).

In Division 2A play, Edison (25-4) will take on the Tritons of Pacific Christian/Orange County (17-12). In 3A action, Orangewood Academy (23-6) will host St Pius X-St. Matthias Academy (18-6).

Garden Grove (19-8) will host University/Irvine (14-15) in a 4AA game.

On Thursday, La Quinta (19-10) defeated Tarbut V’Torah 54-43 in a Division 5A game to advance to the semifinals next week on Tuesday.

It’s bats and diamond time

Basketball is not quite over, but high school baseball and softball have started.

The outstanding performance of the beginning of the season came Thursday from Chad Gurnea, who pitched a no-hitter for Pacifica against Edison in the Loara baseball Tournament.  The Mariners won 2-0 to improve to 2-0. Edison fell to 1-2.

In other prep baseball action, in the Newport Elks Tournament, Orange defeated Northwood 4-2 and Santa Ana beat Magnolia 7-4.

Softball play on Thursday saw Ocean View lose 7-1 to Newport Harbor and Pacifica defeated Esperanza 7-2. Los Amigos bested Orange 18-14 and Costa Mesa won over Western by the score of 10-8.

Edison Chargers in the polo finals

The Edison High girls’ water polo team will play Yucaipa for the Division 2 title on Saturday at the Woolett Aquatics Center in Irvine.

Game time is 2:50 p.m. at the “right” pool. The Chargers are 16-12 over all and the Thunderbirds are 21-10.
