After decrease, new cases rise

Friday’s report on the status of the coronavirus pandemic in Orange County showed mixed results.

According to the county health care agency, confirmed new cases rose to 405 from Thursday’s 317, itself a steep drop from Wednesday’s 946. Deaths increased from 20 to 26.

But the other two major metrics from the OCHCA declined. Hospitalizations fell from 299 to 295 and the use of intensive care units to treat coronavirus patients went from 63 to 56.

So far, Orange County has had 537,603 cases, of which 515,486 are considered recovered. The death toll is at 6,570.

Across the nation, The New York Times reports that – over a 14-day period – new cases are down 65 percent and deaths down 27 percent. In California, Los Angeles Times calculates that new cases are down 70 percent and deaths by 5 percent.
