Mariupol under heavy attack

The besieged port city of Mariupol is coming under increased pressure by Russian forces. While Ukrainan troops and volunteers have had some success in slowing and even stopping the invaders in other parts of their nation, the situation is getting dire in Mariupol.

According to the Associated Press, the city is nearly surrounded and there is heavy damage, with a major steel plant was destroyed. Russian troops are also accused of forcibly relocating thouands of residents, mostly women and children, to Russia.

Also, a rocket attack on Friday in the southern city of Mykolaiv has resulted in the death of as many as 40 Ukrainian marines.

Peace talks between the two countries continue with no sign of progress, and no letup on the combat and casualties, including civilians.

Sports: Baylor bounced out; Bruins win

Defending NCAA basketball champion Baylor was upset 93-86 in overtime Saturday by North Carolina in the second round of the national championship tournament. The Bears (27-7) trailed by 25 at one point but rallied to force the game into overtime. North Carolina (26-9) then jumped out to a lead then and advanced to the Sweet 16 with the East Regional triumph.

They’ll play UCLA (27-7), which advanced with a 72-56 win over St. Mary’s. The next round is set for Thursday and Friday.

Weather: Warming up …

Saturday was cool and breezy, but warmer days are coming. The forecast for Sunday for the West Orange County weather is for a daytime high of 72 and an overnight low of 51 with sunny skies. Monday will bring partly cloudy conditions and a high of 75 (54), and Tuesday looks much warmer, rising to 83 (57) with sunny skies.
