Roe v. Wade to be overturned?

A leaked copy of a draft ruling indicates that the U.S. Supreme Court is going to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision, eliminating a national right to abortion.

The website Politico.com obtained a copy of the draft which showed five members of the court prepared to upend the 1973 decision. Three appeared to be opposed and Chief Justice John Roberts did not have a stated opinion.

According to The New York Times, Roberts acknowledged the existence of the draft ruling, but called its release a “an egregious breach.” He urged an investigation into how such a sensitive document could become public.

Although the draft is not an official ruling, it reflects the conclusion that the addition of three conservative members of the court – appointed by former President Donald Trump – made the end of Roe v. Wade inevitable.

However, such a ruling would not ban such abortions, but leave laws on pregnancy termination to the states.

Observers suggest that the news could have a significant impact on the political landscape in 2022 and 2024, as those on both sides of the issue become energized to support candidates that support their viewpoints.

Ryan vs. Vance for Ohio senate seat

In one of the most closely-watched primary election races on Tuesday (today), the major candidates appear to be a centrist Democrat and a Trump-endorsed Republican, according to the Associated Press.

Rep. Tim Ryan won the Democratic nomination with 71.5 percent of the vote. He’s emphasized “bread-and butter” issues and portrayed himself as “someone who gets things done.”

J.D. Vance, an author-venture capitalist, prevailed in a crowded field, with 31.4 percent of the vote. The two nominees will face off on Nov. 8. The winner will take the seat now held by retiring Senator Rob Portman, a Republican.

Sports: Back to the future with Phil

PHIL JACKSON

After firing coach Frank Vogel, the Los Angeles Lakers have the task of finding a new head guy for the most storied franchise in NBA history. What better way to conduct that search than to use the talents of one of the most storied coaches in NBA history?

Phil Jackson, who coached the Lakers to five league titles, is reportedly involved in helping to sort through possible candidates. According to ESPN, Jackson and others are methodically examining the candidates.

Vogel coached the Lakers to the 2020 NBA title. In 2021, the Lakers posted a 43-30 record in a shortened season. The team was eliminated in the first round by the Phoenix Suns.

Business: Airbnb in a boom period

As tourism and travel have returned to near-normal level, the king of the short-term rental – Airbnb – is having a boom. According to CNN, the leading home-sharing platform reported over 100 million bookings for the first three months of 2022.

That means revenue of $1.5 billion, a 70 percent increase. Opinions about STRs (short-term rentals) vary. They compete with traditional hotels and motels, and – since they are illegal in many cities – generate no tax revenue for local government.

Patrons and operators appreciate the lower costs and potentially big profits, especially if the home is located in an area with a lot of tourism.
