Shooting suspect identified

UPDATE: The man killed in the shooting Sunday at the Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods has been identified as Dr. John Cheng, 52. According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, he was shot as he charged the shooter, which may have helped others to attack and subdue the gunman.

Victims of Sunday’s shooting were members of a Taiwanese congregation. The suspect, David Chou, 68, was reportedly angry at Taiwan because his family was allegedly forcibly moved from mainland China to Taiwan in the wake of the triumph of Chinese Communist forces after 1949.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, arriving deputies found the congregants had tackled the suspect and bound him by tying his legs with extension cords.

One person was killed in the shooting. That person’s identity will not be revealed until official identification by the county coroner and notification of next of kin.

Five people were taken to local hospitals for critical care.

They are referred to as:

  • Victim 1: 66-year-old Asian male, gunshot wound
  • Victim 2: 92-year-old Asian male, gunshot wound
  • Victim 4: 82-year-old Asian male, gunshot wound
  • Victim 5: 75-year-old Asian male, gunshot wound
  • Victim 3: 86-year-old Asian female, gunshot wound.

The suspect in the Laguna Woods church shooting on Sunday has been identified as David Chou, 68, of Las Vegas.

He’s been booked on one felony count of murder and five felony counts of attempted murder, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. No information about a motive has been released.

A press conference is scheduled for this afternoon and more details are expected to be available at that time.
