New cases, deaths up in OC

Three of four major statistics tracking the status of the coronavirus in Orange County showed increases in the latest report from the county health care agency.

Friday’s report – covering May 24-26 – showed confirmed new cases at 2,973, a daily average of 991. That’s up from Wednesday’s average of 610 and last Friday’s 938.

Deaths rose from two to four. Hospitalizations increased from 131 to 139 and the use of intensive case units to treat COVID-19 patients declined from 20 to 17.

To date, Orange County has had 569,375 cases, of which 546,563 are considered recovered.  The total of deaths is now 7,034.

Nationally, The New York Times is reporting that – over a 14-day period – new cases are up 26 percent. Hospitalizations have risen by 29 percent and deaths by 12 percent.

In California, new cases have risen by 63 percent over a similar period, according to Los Angeles Times. Deaths declined by 14 percent.
